Picked up this little gem at a yard sale today. It was pretty small sounding on bass but had a nice fuzzy break-up around 3 or 4 on the volume knob that really responded to how hard you played. maybe 8', script Fs on the knobs, no on/off knob, and it appeared to have smaller tubes. Just hang on to all the old parts and reverse the mods in that case. The first had a smaller cabinet (open back) and speaker. I don't like hacking up vintage Fender amps, but in this case, we're not doing anything non-reversible, should you ever want to put it back to stock for collect-ability's sake. I don't gig with one, but I sure do a lot of practicing with one. But the MMBass is good enough to hold its own with the best of them, it just does it in its own way, and at a lot lower volume, which is a good thing at times. Though that's tough to say, as my favorite amp seems to change with each one I play as I'm playing it, it becomes my favorite. Out of a small collection of silver face Fender amps the Musicmaster Bass may be my favorite. Seth Carmody told me about his, which has slightly different tubes than what mine came with.My 'new' 1971 MM arrived with a pair of RCA 'Black Label' (new term to me) 6V6s. There are a couple of mods you can do to these amps to really wake them up. I figured (after reading all the HC reviews) that there must be others using a Fender Musicmaster Bass amp for a guitar amp. Ditch the POS speaker and replace it with something decent for guitar and the amp comes alive. But as a lot of folks now know, there's a great guitar amp hiding inside. Too little power, the tone really wasn't right for bass, and the speaker was too cheap and didn't deliver the goods. This one has had 2 modifications, commonly known as the. 1 Does anyone have any experience (s) with one of these These have recently hit my radar screen due to one of these being used on a couple of records that I really dig right now (The Black Keys: Brothers and Hacienda: Big Red & Barbacoa), and the same Musicmaster bass amp was used on both records. This was just an inexpensive student model bass amp, it was not intended to be much, and it really wasn't much of a bass amp. These amps are underrated for guitar, get surprisingly loud and have a consistent grind at all volumes.
